Dance (DAN)

DAN 101  Modern Dance  (3 credits)  

An introduction to dance designed to acquaint the student with movement as a medium of expression. Classes will offer dance technique as well as dance combinations. Students will be encouraged to increase their awareness of movement based upon dance exercises to develop Modern dance technique.

Course Rotation: Fall and Spring.
DAN 105  Musical Theater Dance Styles  (2 credits)  

A combination of Modern, Ballet and Jazz stylistically focus on Contemporary Musical Theater dance.

Prerequisites: Music Theater Majors Only. New Core: Fulfills 3 credits in Area of Knowledge IV.
DAN 110  Ballet I (Beginning/Intermediate)  (2 credits)  

Students will be in a studio class through a series of barre, adagio, petit allegro, and turns exercises. Students will learn the principles and techniques of American classical ballet. By learning a series of ballet combinations, students will begin to learn some of the choreographic principles and styles of classical dance.

Prerequisites: DAN 101 or DAN 102 or permission of Chair.
DAN 114  Theater Dance II  (2 credits)  

This course is designed to develop the student's ability to understand and properly execute theatre dance movement/styles of the various decades: 1900AD- present day. The student will complete this class with a thorough overview of theater dance styles and the tools to successfully audition and perform in musical theatre dance.

Course Rotation: NY: Fall and Spring.
Prerequisites: Restricted to Musical Theatre majors only.
DAN 196A  Topic: Theater Dance I (Beginning/Intermediate)  (2 credits)  

Class at Broadway Dance Center based on skill placement. Students will develop their technique and ability to execute Broadway Theater dance forms. Students will learn to execute steps and integrate them into dance combinations suitable for audition. History of the dance form will also be stressed.

Prerequisites: DAN 101 or DAN 102 or permission of Chair.
DAN 196B  Topic: Tap Dance I (Beginning to Intermediate)  (2 credits)  

Class at Broadway Dance Center based on skill placement. Students in a studio class acquire and improve their technique in Tap Dance in a variety of styles (soft shoe, hoofing, 40's style, etc.) Students will learn to execute steps and integrate them into dance combinations suitable for audition. History of the dance form will also be stressed.

Prerequisites: DAN 101 or DAN 102 or permission of Chair.
DAN 196D  Musical Jazz Dance Theater  (3 credits)  

A combination of Modern, Ballet and Jazz stylistic focus on Contemporary Musical Theater dance.

Prerequisites: Open to Theater majors only.
DAN 196F  Topic: Dance History  (3 credits)  

Students will learn the history of dance beginning with ritual and social dance and culminates with contemporary dance of the 21st century. Dance will also be examined parallel to its collaborative disciplines as a reflection and outgrowth of social and historical climates.

DAN 202  Jazz I  (2 credits)  

: The study of jazz dance techniques. During discussing and assignments students will be encourages to develop their critical awareness of jazz dancing as a performing art.

DAN 204  Modern Dance II (intermediate)  (3 credits)  

Class at Broadway Dance Center based on skill placement. A continuation of the work done in DAN 101. Students will learn through barre and floor exercises and enable them to continue building their skill and understanding of modern dance based in Graham and Limon techniques. Proper warm-up and alignment will be stressed.

Prerequisites: DAN 101 or permission of Department Chair.
DAN 205  Jazz Dance II (Intermediate)  (2 credits)  

Class at Broadway Dance Center based on skill placement. A continuation of the work done in DAN 102. Students will learn through barre and floor exercises and enable them to pick up and learn jazz steps and combinations that will strengthen them as jazz dance performers. Proper warm-up and alignment will be stressed.

Prerequisites: DAN 202 or permission of Chair.
DAN 206  Tap Dance II  (2 credits)  
DAN 207  Hip Hop  (2 credits)  

This course is designed for all dance levels to enjoy. It will examine numerous hip hop styles relevant to the history of hip hop dance. Students will learn to execute the basic hip hop moves that have become so prevalent in today’s dance society.

DAN 208  Contemporary Dance I  (3 credits)  

Students will physically examine the foundation of Contemporary Dance techniques through movement with classroom combinations and choreography, view videos and discuss various techniques and styles through group discussion. Students will be asked to read works and interviews of Contemporary Dance Choreographers. Work on beginning vocabulary and technical accuracy, explore how the body moves through space and perform and properly execute beginning level choreography. Traditional contemporary repertoire of chosen choreographers will be presented according to class technical levels.

DAN 216  Tap Dance I  (2 credits)  

This course is designed to develop the student’s beginning tap technique, vocabulary, performance, and basic understanding of Tap.

DAN 296  Topics in Dance  (3 credits)  
DAN 296B  Ballet II  (3 credits)  

A continuation of work begun in Ballet I. Students will work on alignment and improvement in barre, petit allegro, adagio, and turns. Combinations created by the instructor and drawn from standard repertoire will be learned.

Prerequisites: DAN 110 or permission of Department.
DAN 300  Jazz IV  (3 credits)  

This advanced 300 level course will develop the student’s ability to execute various types of jazz dance steps to a wide variety of jazz and pop music and proficiently incorporate them into a dance composition. The students will apply advanced technique to performance theories and concepts, as well as audition skills. The course will also examine the theory, advanced technique, and vocabulary of jazz dance and explore individual artistic expression.

Course Rotation: NY: Fall and Spring.
DAN 310  Ballet III  (2 credits)  

Ballet III encompasses the more difficult movements of classical ballet. Students of proficient technical level, (possessing perfectly placed bodies with feet and legs that are lengthened and strong), may explore pointe work and basic ballet partnering at the discretion of the instructor.

DAN 311  Jazz III  (2 credits)  

This advanced 300 level course will develop the student’s ability to execute various types of jazz steps and proficiently incorporate them into a dance composition. The students will apply advanced technique to performance theories and concepts, as well as audition skills. The course will also examine the theory, technique, and vocabulary of jazz and explore individual artistic expression.

DAN 312  Choreography  (3 credits)  

A practical experience focusing on the choreographer’s creative process. Emphasis will be placed on identifying. Selecting and utilizing a variety of source material. Interpreting the source material and creating a piece of choreography through use of various dance.
